A new book chapter titled “Youth at International Climate Negotiations” has been published in the edited volume Youth and Democracy in the Climate Crisis, produced by the Council of Europe and the European Commission. The chapter, authored by Yi Hyun Kang, Riham Helmy, and Amandine Orsini, examines the role and diversity of youth participation in international climate processes.

The research shows that youth engagement at climate conferences is broader and more representative than commonly assumed. Many participants come from the Global South and reflect a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds, linking local and national movements to the international level. The findings challenge narratives that frame youth climate movements as dominated by “white” or “well-to-do” youth from the Global North. Evidence from COP27 and the 17th Conference of Youth (COY17) supports the chapter’s argument, demonstrating the inclusivity and diversity of global youth climate action.
